Word to Markdown, explained
Move a Word document to Markdown for a README, a wiki, a static site or a docs-as-code repository. pandoc reads the structure of the .docx, so headings, lists, links and tables come out as proper Markdown instead of a wall of text.
What is converted, and how
- Headings
- The Heading 1 to Heading 6 styles become
#to######. - Emphasis
- Bold, italic and strikethrough become
**,*and~~. - Lists
- Bulleted and numbered lists, nesting included.
- Tables
- Pipe tables; tables with merged cells stay HTML tables.
- Links and footnotes
- Markdown links and
[^1]footnotes. - Images
- Embedded as
data:URIs, so the Markdown file is self-contained. - Title and author
- From the document properties, as a YAML front matter block.
Limitations
- Embedded images make the Markdown file large. Replace them with links to image files before you publish it.
- Tracked changes are taken as accepted; comments, headers, footers and text colours are left out.
- Only .docx, up to 2 MB.
Tips
- Use Word's Heading styles before converting: text that only looks like a heading stays a paragraph.
- The Markdown converts straight back to Word, PDF or any other format on this site.
- The file is converted in an isolated, temporary workspace on our server and deleted as soon as the result has been sent back. It is never stored or logged.
