md/convert

About
md/convert.

A small, fast converter for people who write in Markdown and need to hand someone a PDF, a Word file or a spreadsheet.

Why it exists

I built md/convert because turning a Markdown note, README or table into a clean PDF, Word document or Excel sheet shouldn't require installing heavy command-line tools or uploading private notes to cluttered websites.

The goal is simple: paste Markdown, get a clean file, with no account, no watermark and no copy of your document kept anywhere.

How it is built

The site is a small web application running on a server in the EU. It is built on open-source software:

  • pandoc by John MacFarlane and contributors (GPL) does most conversions.
  • WeasyPrint (BSD) lays out the PDFs.
  • openpyxl (MIT) writes the Excel files.
  • The typefaces are IBM Plex Mono and Instrument Serif, both under the SIL Open Font License and served from this site.

Each conversion runs in an isolated process with strict time and memory limits. It cannot read files on the server or reach the internet.
