PDF to text, explained
Pull all the text out of a PDF into a plain .txt file. Copying from a PDF viewer tends to break lines in the middle of sentences; here every paragraph comes out as one line, so the text flows again wherever you paste it.
What is converted, and how
- Paragraphs
- One line per paragraph, with a blank line between paragraphs.
- Lists
- Stay lists, with a dash or a number in front of each item.
- Short lines
- Addresses, table rows and similar lines keep their line breaks.
- Encoding
- UTF-8, so accents and non-Latin scripts come through as they are.
Limitations
- Tables lose their grid: each row becomes a line with the cells separated by spaces.
- Scanned PDFs are pictures of text without a text layer, and the converter doesn't do text recognition (OCR). Password-protected PDFs can't be read either.
- At most 50 pages and 2 MB per PDF. Images, attachments, links and scripts in the PDF are ignored.
Tips
- Want to keep lists and paragraphs as structure? PDF to Markdown keeps the same text with light markup.
- The file is converted in an isolated, temporary workspace on our server and deleted as soon as the result has been sent back. It is never stored or logged.
