PDF to Word, explained

Turn a PDF into a .docx you can edit in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice. This is a text conversion: you get the words of the PDF as normal, reflowing paragraphs and lists in a clean document, not a copy of the page layout.

What is converted, and how

Paragraphs
Rejoined into normal Word paragraphs that reflow while you edit.
Lists
Bulleted and numbered lines become Word lists.
Short lines
Addresses and table rows keep their line breaks.
Styles
Everything uses Word's standard styles, so restyling the document is quick.

Limitations

  • The layout is not copied: fonts, colours, columns and images are left out, and headings and tables are not recognised.
  • Scanned PDFs are pictures of text without a text layer, and the converter doesn't do text recognition (OCR). Password-protected PDFs can't be read either.
  • At most 50 pages and 2 MB per PDF. Images, attachments, links and scripts in the PDF are ignored.

Tips

  • Apply Heading 1 and Heading 2 in Word afterwards to get the navigation pane and an automatic table of contents.
  • Only need the words? PDF to text gives you a plain .txt file.
  • The file is converted in an isolated, temporary workspace on our server and deleted as soon as the result has been sent back. It is never stored or logged.
