Markdown to Word, explained
Turn Markdown into a .docx file you can keep editing in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice or Pages. Pandoc maps the structure of your Markdown to real Word styles instead of hard-coded formatting, so the document behaves like one you wrote in Word yourself.
What is converted, and how
- Headings
#to######become the styles Heading 1 to Heading 6, so the navigation pane and Word's automatic table of contents work.- Lists
- Bulleted and numbered Word lists, nesting included.
- Tables
- Native Word tables with a header row.
- Code
- Set in the Source Code style with a monospaced font.
- Footnotes
- Real Word footnotes at the bottom of the page.
- Front matter
- YAML
title, authoranddatebecome the Title, Author and Date paragraphs at the top.
Limitations
- Images are only included when embedded as
data:URIs; linked images show their alt text. - The document uses pandoc's default styles. Custom templates cannot be uploaded.
- Raw HTML in the Markdown is left out.
Tips
- Restyle the whole document at once: right-click a style such as Heading 1 in Word's Styles pane and choose Modify.
- Insert a table of contents via References → Table of Contents; it picks up your Markdown headings.
- Start the Markdown with a YAML block (
title: My report) to get a proper title. - Not sure about the syntax? See the Markdown cheat sheet.
