HTML to Markdown, explained
Paste HTML or open an .html file and get readable Markdown. Useful for moving content out of a CMS, cleaning up a saved web page or turning an HTML email into notes.
What is converted, and how
- Headings
<h1>to<h6>become#to######.- Text
<b>,<i>,<code>and<a>become**,*, backticks and Markdown links.- Lists and tables
- Markdown lists and pipe tables; tables with merged cells stay HTML.
- Code blocks
<pre>becomes a fenced block, with the language when the class names one.- Images
- Markdown images that keep their original address.
- Clutter
<div>and<span>wrappers, classes, inline styles, scripts and comments are dropped.
Limitations
- Relative links and image paths are kept as they are, so they only work next to the original site.
- Layout made with CSS (columns, cards, grids) is flattened into a single column of text.
- Up to 512 KB of HTML.
Tips
- Paste just the article part of a page to leave out menus and footers.
- The file is converted in an isolated, temporary workspace on our server and deleted as soon as the result has been sent back. It is never stored or logged.
