How to copy a ChatGPT answer to Word
- Copy the answer with the copy button. Under every ChatGPT answer is a copy icon. Use it instead of selecting the text: the button copies the answer as Markdown, with its headings, tables and formulas intact. Selecting the text with your mouse copies only what you see and loses most of that structure.
- Paste it into the box above. Press Ctrl+V (⌘V on a Mac) in the text box. Word is already selected as the output format.
- Convert and open the file. Press Convert to Word. The .docx downloads straight away and opens in Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice or Pages, with the headings in Word's navigation pane.
Why not paste straight into Word?
ChatGPT writes its answers in Markdown, a plain-text format in which **bold** and ### Heading are formatting instructions. Word doesn't read Markdown. Depending on how you copy and where you paste, the symbols show up as text, tables arrive as loose lines and formulas appear as LaTeX code such as \frac{1}{2} instead of an equation. Converting the Markdown fixes all three, because every part is mapped to its Word counterpart.
What you get
- Headings
##and###become Word heading styles, so the navigation pane and an automatic table of contents work.- Bold and italic

Limitations
- Images and charts that ChatGPT made are not part of the copied text. Download them from the chat and insert them in Word.
- The document uses Word's standard styles. Change the look afterwards via the Styles pane or the Design tab.
- Copy one answer at a time: the copy button only copies the answer it belongs to.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my ChatGPT answer show ** and ### in Word?
ChatGPT writes Markdown, in which **bold** and ### Heading are formatting instructions. Word doesn't read Markdown, so the symbols show up as text. Converting the answer here turns them into real formatting.
How do I get a ChatGPT table into Word?
Copy the whole answer with the copy button and convert it here. Every table becomes a native Word table with a header row. Need the table in a spreadsheet instead? Choose Excel under Convert to: each table becomes its own worksheet.
Do math formulas work?
Yes. Formulas between \( \) and \[ \], the notation ChatGPT uses, and between dollar signs become native Word equations, not images or LaTeX code.
Does this work for Claude, Gemini and Copilot?
Yes. Most AI chat tools write their answers in Markdown, so you can copy and convert them the same way.
Doesn't ChatGPT export to Word itself?
ChatGPT can sometimes create a Word file when you ask for one. Converting here works for any answer you already have, takes a few seconds and gives the same result every time.
Can I get a PDF instead?
Yes. Choose PDF under Convert to before you press Convert.
Is my text stored or used for training?
No. Your text is converted in a temporary workspace and deleted as soon as the file has been sent back. It is never logged, kept or used for training.
